university of aberdeen, interns with impact, the wood foundation

We are delighted to share that ProActive Minds, a two-year (2022-24) Knowledge Transfer Partnership funded by The Wood Foundation and Innovate UK, has been shortlisted in the Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards 2025 which highlight the diversity of sectors and disciplines thriving in Scotland.

A finalist in the Making a Social Difference category, ProActive Minds was a collaboration between Sport Aberdeen and Glasgow Caledonian University focused upon improving young people’s mental health.

A sport and exercise psychologist, appointed as the Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate, led the project in Aberdeen through the Active Schools network and wider Sport Aberdeen community. They developed resources, upskilled staff and volunteers and provided individual support to children and young people across Aberdeen City.

This pilot, backed by sportscotland, NHS Grampian, SAMH, and Aberdeen City Council, now aims to demonstrate the value of this approach and present a compelling case for national rollout.

Ali MacLachlan, The Wood Foundation’s UK Director, said: “At The Wood Foundation, we are committed to investing in innovative approaches that create meaningful change for young people. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships offer a unique opportunity to fund organisations who want to be test and learn from innovative solutions for social gain. ProActive Minds is a fantastic example of how collaboration can drive impact, equipping communities with the knowledge and resources to support mental wellbeing through physical activity and healthier choices. We are thrilled to see this partnership recognised and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards 2025 finalists.”
