Launched in 2009 with joint funding from the Gatsby Foundation ‘Chai – Kwa Maendeleo ya Tanzania’ (Tea – for the development of Tanzania) was the first TWF programme in East Africa.

With additional funding from the UK Department for International Development, Chai currently comprises a $17 million industry program in Tanzania. Chai has adopted a portfolio of interventions which include matching grants to buy-down risk and encourage innovation with the private sector, co-investment with lead investors in greenfield development, and technical assistance with the broader industry to improve competitiveness of the market system.
