The Wood Foundation works in Scotland in a few different ways. We design and deliver programmes where focused intervention can help shift outcomes, especially in education and young people’s development. We fund organisations already doing important work in communities. And we build partnerships with schools, charities, local authorities, enterprise bodies and others who can turn shared ambition into practical change.
Our role changes depending on what the work needs. At times we lead from the front, bringing structure, investment and momentum to a new idea. At other times, we stand behind partners with flexible funding, support and trust. Across it all, we stay close to the work - listening, learning, adapting and helping impact grow beyond a single grant, programme or partnership.
Much of our work is about strengthening the people who shape Scotland’s future every day. That means backing educators, school leaders, young people and community partners with the time, tools and support to do their best work — because when people are trusted and equipped, change can spread far beyond one project.
We bring people and organisations together around shared challenges - from schools and charities to local authorities, enterprise bodies and regional partners. Our role is often to add momentum: connecting ideas, opening doors, sharing experience and helping partners turn ambition into practical action.
When we see an opportunity to make a focused difference, we create programmes with the structure, investment and people needed to deliver them well. From youth-led giving through the Young and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) to education programmes shaped around teachers, schools and local authorities, these are long-term commitments designed to build confidence, capability and lasting change.
Through flexible, trust-based funding, we support charities and community organisations already making a difference. We aim to make that support straightforward and useful, giving partners room to respond to real needs, strengthen their work and focus on the people they serve.
Our work also supports the wider conditions Scotland needs to thrive, including enterprise, skills and economic opportunity. Through major regional partnerships, we invest in work that can strengthen local economies, create better prospects and support places through long-term change.
Sometimes impact starts with a specific barrier, opportunity or need. In those moments, we can make targeted investments that unlock something important - whether that is infrastructure, access, learning, capacity or support that helps people and places move forward.
When we fund organisations, we want that support to help them go further. That means listening first, understanding what they need and shaping funding around the realities of their work. We trust partners to know their communities, while bringing our own support, experience and impact expertise to help them strengthen what they do and show the difference it makes.
Lasting impact rarely happens quickly. Many of our programmes and partnerships are built over years, with time to test ideas, learn from what happens and adapt along the way. We stay close to the work, not to control it, but to understand what is changing, where support is still needed and how strong ideas can continue beyond our involvement.
