Supporting smallholder farmers through sugarcane productivity, training and sector learning in Kenya

Supporting smallholder sugarcane farmers

The Wood Foundation Africa’s work in sugar focused on improving outcomes for smallholder farmers connected to Kenya’s sugarcane industry.

Working with Transmara Sugar Company, we supported farmer training, productivity improvements and smallholder expansion, helping farmers increase yields from existing and new fields, while building learning that could be shared more widely across the sector.

What our sugar work supported

Farmer training

We supported work designed to help smallholder sugarcane farmers improve productivity, strengthen farming practices and increase yields over time.

By investing in farmer training, the partnership aimed to create practical improvements that could benefit farmers directly and support stronger rural enterprise.

Smallholder expansion

The work supported Transmara Sugar Company’s commitment to smallholder expansion, helping more farmers connect into the sugarcane value chain.

This reflected a wider aim across The Wood Foundation Africa’s agriculture portfolio: to support industries where smallholder farmers can access more secure, sustainable opportunities.

Industry learning

Our sugar work was designed not only to support one business, but to generate learning that could be shared across Kenya’s wider sugarcane industry.

By applying smallholder expertise in a new sector, the partnership helped build understanding of what can improve farmer outcomes, productivity and long-term rural development.

Transmara Sugar Company

The Wood Foundation Africa partnered with Transmara Sugar Company in Kenya to apply smallholder expertise within the sugarcane sector.

The work focused on supporting farmers in Kilgoris and Transmara to increase yields from existing and new fields, while strengthening the systems around farmer training, productivity and rural economic opportunity.

For The Wood Foundation Africa, the partnership showed how learning from one agricultural sector can be applied in another - supporting practical change for farmers while contributing insight to the wider industry.
